| ReDiscover Substance Use Disorder Treatment |
Since 1969, ReDiscover has been a vital part of the Kansas City metropolitan area, supporting individuals and families impacted by mental health challenges and substance use disorders (SUD). As a certified Community Behavioral Health Center and nonprofit organization, ReDiscover is dedicated to helping people lead healthier, more stable lives. With services tailored to the unique needs of each client, ReDiscover provides a wide range of programs focused on recovery, wellness, and lasting change.
Meeting People Where They Are
ReDiscover serves primarily Jackson County, Missouri, including Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Raytown, and Grandview. The majority of those served face serious barriers to care—many are low-income, uninsured, unemployed, and struggling with both addiction and mental illness.
To meet these challenges, ReDiscover offers compassionate, person-centered treatment. Every individual begins with a comprehensive assessment by a licensed professional to determine the most appropriate level of care. Clients are then paired with a treatment team, which may include therapists, nurses, community support specialists, and psychiatrists. Transportation and social support are also provided to ensure consistent access to services.
Evidence-Based Care For Real Results
ReDiscover employs a wide range of proven therapies and evidence-based practices. These include:
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to reshape unhealthy thinking patterns
• Motivational Interviewing to support client-led goal setting
• Contingency Management to reward progress and encourage responsibility
• Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma
• Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in women’s programming
These methods help clients build resilience, manage their emotions, and make lasting behavioral changes.
A Full Continuum Of Services
ReDiscover offers several levels of care to meet the different needs of individuals at various stages of recovery:
Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs)
Operating two specialized clinics—Treatment Options Program (TOP) and Transitions—ReDiscover is the only provider in eastern Jackson County offering medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction. Clients receive daily dosing (including methadone and buprenorphine), therapy, case management, psychiatric services, and medical evaluations. These clinics are staffed by experienced physicians, nurses, and counselors.
Outpatient Treatment
For those not needing residential care, ReDiscover’s Level 4 outpatient program offers day treatment at its Flory Center (Lee’s Summit) and Woodland Office (Kansas City). Services include individual and group therapy, psychiatric care, aftercare, case management, and transportation. The AltCare Program serves justice-involved women referred by state parole and probation officers.
Residential Treatment
Clients needing a more structured environment can enter ReDiscover’s residential programs, which combine safe housing with intensive treatment. Services include therapy, meals, 24-hour staff support, and connections to recovery groups like AA and NA. Locations include:
• Co-Ed Housing (up to 14 adults, 90-day maximum)
• Friendship House (short-term housing for women and children)
• Catherine’s Place (transitional housing for women and children for up to 6 months)
These residential options offer not only therapy but also access to childcare, family meals, and parenting support in a safe, nurturing setting.
Impacting Lives, One Family at a Time
ReDiscover’s programs aim to do more than treat addiction—they support whole-person wellness and family healing. Treatment goals include:
• Reducing relapse through counseling and MAT
• Stabilizing housing
• Improving family dynamics
• Retaining clients in treatment for a minimum of 30 days
In 2023, 90% of clients stayed in treatment for at least a month. Sixty percent improved their housing situation within 90 days, and half began receiving medication-assisted treatment.
A Growing Need In The Face Of Crisis
Substance use continues to devastate families in Jackson County. In 2023 alone, the county recorded 282 drug-related deaths, one of the highest rates in Missouri. Emergency departments treated over 1,200 local residents for overdoses, with opioids, methamphetamines, and cocaine among the most common drugs involved.
National data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) underscores the scope of the problem: nearly 49 million people aged 12 and older have a substance use disorder, yet 97.5% report they do not need treatment.
This contradiction reveals the complex nature of addiction and the urgent need for early intervention. Without treatment, individuals often end up in emergency rooms, jails, or worse. ReDiscover’s MAT services help mitigate withdrawal pain—a major barrier to quitting—and give clients the tools to manage long-term recovery.
Meeting The Challenge
ReDiscover is experiencing unprecedented demand. In 2016, it served about 1,000 individuals per day. Today, that number has doubled to over 2,100. As the only provider of MAT using methadone in eastern Jackson County, and one of the few offering programs designed for women and children, ReDiscover fills critical service gaps across the region.
While other providers in the area (e.g., Heartland Center, Benilde Hall, Comprehensive Mental Health Services) also offer substance use treatment, no single organization can meet the growing need alone. ReDiscover stands out for its integrated approach—offering substance use treatment, mental health services, housing, parenting support, and medical care in a single continuum.
A Path To Recovery & Hope
For more than five decades, ReDiscover has helped individuals overcome addiction, regain their independence, and rebuild their lives. Its commitment to evidence-based care, community partnerships, and whole-family support ensures that clients receive the help they need—when they need it most.
In a region struggling with rising overdoses and persistent health disparities, ReDiscover is not just a treatment provider; it is a lifeline for thousands of individuals and families across Jackson County and beyond.
