Building Healthy Choices & Positive Relationships
The Mighty Mules Program is a dynamic, interactive curriculum designed to engage students directly with law enforcement officers in the classroom. This unique approach fosters positive relationships, lending credibility to important lessons about substance abuse prevention and personal safety.
Program Structure & Student Engagement
Delivered over nine weeks, the program includes nine lessons, each lasting 40 to 45 minutes. These lessons utilize diverse teaching methods such as group work, pair discussions, and fun, hands-on activities that encourage active student participation. The curriculum also features videos produced by youth, showcasing real stories that resonate with students and deepen their understanding of the material.
Each lesson is carefully structured with clear outlines, activity instructions, and homework assignments that reinforce key concepts. Starting with the second lesson, students review material from previous sessions, helping them retain and apply the skills they learn. Teachers use student homework to gauge comprehension and provide additional support where needed.
Addressing Violence & Bullying
A dedicated lesson on violence prevention is included during Anti-Bullying Month in October. Students explore how violence is not an effective way to handle stress or anger, learning instead to communicate positively and manage emotions constructively. The program teaches students how to recognize bullying, respond appropriately as victims or witnesses, and support peers who are targeted.
Students also learn how to report bullying safely and are reminded that violence is never the answer—encouraging a school culture rooted in respect and kindness.
Promoting Substance Abuse Prevention & Positive Norms
The Mighty Mules Program aims to reduce the use of alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs among youth. It promotes strong anti-substance use attitudes and helps students develop resistance skills to say no to drugs and alcohol. By fostering healthy norms and providing reliable resources, the program equips young people to make informed, confident choices as they grow and mature.
