Ozark Respite & Recovery Housing Services

A Mission of Support & Empowerment

Ozark Recovery Housing exists to provide more than just a roof—it offers a pathway to recovery. With a mission centered on creating a supportive, accessible environment for people living with substance use disorders, the program combines person-centered housing, evidence-based treatment, and harm-reduction practices under one roof. Its approach recognizes that every recovery journey is unique and requires flexibility, compassion, and practical support.

Low-Barrier, High-Support Recovery Housing

The program’s housing model is designed to meet individuals where they are. Ozark Recovery Housing begins with a respite and recovery phase for individuals who have fewer than 30 days of sobriety. This "step-up" model provides a low-barrier entry point, welcoming individuals regardless of their current stage of use or co-occurring mental or medical health needs.

By offering same-day access to primary care, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and mental health evaluations, Ozark removes traditional obstacles to care. This immediate, integrated approach ensures that people can begin their recovery journey without delay.

Rest, Recovery & Resources

The first phase of care—respite housing—typically lasts between 10 and 14 days, with a maximum stay of 30 days. During this time, the focus is on meeting basic needs and laying the foundation for stability. Clients are offered a safe, supportive space where they can rest and begin to recover, physically and emotionally, from the effects of substance use and instability.

Participants are also introduced to key recovery resources and services, including:

    Primary and mental healthcare

    Counseling and peer support

    Medication-assisted treatment

    Case management and discharge planning

These supports aim to stabilize individuals while helping them consider and plan for their next steps.

Planning For Long-Term Recovery

Ozark Recovery Housing doesn’t just offer temporary shelter—it helps people prepare for what comes next. After stabilization, participants work with staff to determine the best course forward, whether it’s entering a residential treatment program, enrolling in intensive outpatient services, continuing with Ozark’s own sober living program, or connecting with another supportive housing or recovery provider.

This person-centered planning approach ensures that participants are active partners in shaping their recovery journey, empowered to define their goals and access the right tools to reach them.

Why It’s Needed: Substance Use & Housing Instability In Kansas City

Kansas City is facing a growing crisis related to substance use and housing instability. Over the past five years:

Substance use disorders in the city have increased by 15%, especially involving opioids and methamphetamines

Drug-related overdose deaths have risen by 20%

Emergency room visits tied to substance use have increased by 25%

These numbers reflect not just a public health crisis, but a need for immediate, accessible, and compassionate interventions.

At the same time, housing instability remains a significant barrier to recovery. Roughly 40% of individuals struggling with substance use in Kansas City are either homeless or at risk of losing their housing. The city’s overall homeless population has grown by 10% in just three years, with substance use disorders playing a major role in that trend.

Addressing Critical Gaps In The Community

Ozark Recovery Housing addresses four urgent community needs:

1. Immediate Stabilization: Many people with substance use disorders are left to seek care in emergency rooms or jails, which are not equipped to provide meaningful recovery services. Ozark offers an alternative: rapid, low-barrier access to a safe, supportive place to begin the healing process.

2. Housing Stability: Without stable housing, recovery is incredibly difficult. Ozark’s model gives people the foundation they need to stay safe and sober, even in the earliest and most vulnerable stages of recovery.

3. Integrated Treatment: Ozark provides access to comprehensive care that includes both physical and mental health services. This holistic approach reflects the reality that substance use is rarely an isolated issue—it is deeply connected to trauma, mental health, and chronic medical conditions.

4. Community and Connection: Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation. Ozark fosters connection by building support networks, linking participants with peer mentors, counselors, and treatment providers who can walk alongside them every step of the way.

A Model That Works

Ozark Recovery Housing’s model blends compassion with proven, evidence-based practices. By removing barriers, offering on-site and same-day care, and respecting each person’s individual recovery path, the program is making a real difference in the lives of Kansas City residents.

Participants leave with more than just sobriety—they gain stability, community support, and a plan for the future. Whether someone is in crisis, looking to take the next step after detox or inpatient care, or seeking long-term housing support as they work through recovery, Ozark Recovery Housing offers a safe place to land—and a hopeful place to grow.
