Supporting Successful Reentry & Violence Prevention
Journey to New Life (JTNL) is a dedicated organization that works with individuals recently released from prison or placed on felony probation within the past three years. Recognizing the many challenges people face when reentering society, JTNL offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to meet immediate needs and support long-term stability. Through emergency assistance, case management, and employment support, JTNL aims to help participants rebuild their lives and contribute to safer communities.
Immediate Support Through First Stop Services
Many individuals leaving incarceration return to their communities with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. To meet this urgent need, JTNL provides First Stop services that offer emergency assistance with essentials such as clothing, personal hygiene items, and identification documents. These vital resources help remove immediate barriers, allowing participants to focus on rebuilding their lives.
Case Management: Pathway To Stable Housing
Safe and affordable housing is a cornerstone of successful reentry, yet it remains one of the greatest hurdles for people with criminal records. JTNL’s wraparound Case Management services focus on helping clients obtain and maintain stable housing. Case managers work closely with participants to navigate housing applications, connect with landlords, and address challenges related to stigma and limited housing options. By securing safe homes, clients gain the foundation necessary to pursue employment, education, and other life goals.
Employment Services: Building A Living Wage
Obtaining stable employment is critical for self-sufficiency and community safety. JTNL’s Employment services assist clients in job searches, skill-building, and resume development. The program acknowledges the unique challenges faced by people with felony records, who often encounter discrimination and limited opportunities in the job market. By connecting clients with employers who understand their circumstances and by supporting skill development, JTNL helps participants secure living-wage jobs essential for a stable and independent life.
Overcoming Barriers To Successful Reentry
Reentering society after incarceration is a complex process filled with obstacles. Individuals often face stigma that limits access to housing and employment, making it difficult to reintegrate successfully. In Kansas City, these challenges are compounded by a shortage of affordable housing and well-paying jobs accessible by public transportation.
According to data from the Missouri Department of Corrections, nearly 44% of people released from prison return to incarceration within a few years, reflecting a critical need for effective reentry support. Factors such as untreated mental health issues, substance use disorders, unemployment, and limited education contribute heavily to this cycle of recidivism.
Addressing Behavioral Health & Social Needs
Many people returning from prison live with elevated rates of behavioral health disorders, substance use disorders, disabilities, and chronic physical health conditions compared to the general population. JTNL’s holistic approach addresses these complex needs through tailored case management and connection to community health resources. By supporting mental health and substance use recovery, the program works to break the cycles that often lead to reoffending.
Reducing Recidivism & Enhancing Community Safety
JTNL’s Violence Prevention program is designed specifically to reduce the risk of reoffending and violence among individuals transitioning from incarceration back into the community. By tackling the underlying causes of criminal behavior—such as lack of housing, employment barriers, and behavioral health needs—JTNL promotes lasting positive change.
The program’s effectiveness is evident: fewer than 6% of JTNL clients experience recidivism, a rate significantly lower than the state average. This success not only benefits the individuals served but also contributes to the safety and well-being of the broader community.
Economic & Social Impact
The high rates of recidivism impose significant social and economic costs on communities. By providing comprehensive support to returning citizens, JTNL helps reduce these burdens. Stable housing, gainful employment, and behavioral health support translate into fewer arrests, less homelessness, and stronger families.
Additionally, by helping individuals build productive lives, JTNL fosters safer neighborhoods and stronger social networks, which are essential for preventing violence and promoting community resilience.
Offering A Lifeline
Journey to New Life offers a lifeline for people returning home from incarceration, empowering them to overcome barriers and build a foundation for success. Through emergency aid, personalized case management, and employment support, JTNL addresses the complex challenges faced by justice-involved individuals, while promoting safety and stability within their communities. This program not only transforms individual lives but also strengthens families and neighborhoods, contributing to a safer, more equitable society for all.
