In The Lee's Summit Police Department's Own Words
The Lee’s Summit Police Department teaches the D.A.R.E curriculum in all second, fourth and sixth grades in the R-7 Elementary schools within and outside of Lee’s Summit. LSPD also teaches first, third and fifth grade in two R-4 Elementary schools and one private parochial school.
In addition, the LSPD D.A.R.E unit instructs the 7th grade curriculum at the three middle schools within Lee’s Summit. The middle school lessons incorporate the D.A.R.E “Keeping it Real” curriculum, which reinforces the lessons learned in the 6th grade Core sessions and help to further promote good decision making and living a violence- and drug-free life.
Our D.A.R.E officers also teach:
- internet safety
- vaping
- firearms safety
- stranger danger
- good touch/bad touch
- bullying
- conflict management
- dealing with anger and peer pressure
- actions vs. consequences
When we include all Core, Keeping It Real, and Visitation grade levels, the total number of students instructed by LSPD D.A.R.E officers exceeds 6,000 student contacts per school year.
D.A.R.E officers counsel students at the request of school administration, are trusted advisors in regard to safety concerns at the schools, and handle police matters and calls for service when they are on site.
