Purpose Statement
DARE is a program designed for positive interaction between student and police officers who will educate the students about the dangers of substance abuse, risky and violent behaviors, as well as social media dangers, peer pressure, vaping, bullying, and many other situations.
The purpose is designed to build a foundation from the ground up to frame the basis of good and appropriate decision making in many of life's choices. The program is designed for 5th grade students in and around the Blue Springs IV school district. Overall, the goal is to ensure our children are given every tool imaginable early in life to be a productive member of society and to help in the betterment of oneself and as society.
Needs Addressed
This program helps combat the negative influences of society and peer pressures at an early age to help guide students about appropriate responses to social media issues, violent behaviors towards them or others, bullying and it's negative effects on self-esteem, substance abuse and how it affects you emotionally, physically and mentally, and a myriad of other situations that youth encounter.
This program is directed towards students in 5th grade, who are approximately 11-12 years of age, who are preparing to enter Middle school. Several factors will be utilized from resisting social media peer pressure, to techniques on overcoming violent situations inside and outside the home, to formulating negative attitudes about alcohol consumption and substance abuse, and teach students to believe in themselves, trust their instincts and listen to trusted adults for advice and guidance throughout their lives.
Services
DARE officers will present DARE lessons to each of the 5th grade classes—lessons that used recognized teaching strategies allowing students to be involved in their own learning. Students will have the opportunity to act out the real strategies of Define, Assess, Respond and Evaluate.
