CMHS Substance Use Disorder Program
Comprehensive Mental Health Services, Inc.
Program Summary: The Comprehensive Mental Health Services’ (CMHS) Substance Use Disorder program provides an array of high-quality services to assist those who otherwise cannot afford or access services in overcoming their addictions. The program achieves its purpose by providing residential substance use services, comprehensive day treatment, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), community-support services, and wrap-around services such as employment support, housing assistance, financial education, and health/well-being support. CMHS staff provide a critical resource for Jackson County community members who have nowhere else to turn for help and treatment.

2022 COMBAT Funding: $475,000.00
In CMHS' Own Words
Through our longtime partnership, COMBAT funds have supported the program’s residential substance use services and the partial hospitalization treatment residential clients receive at CMHS’s outpatient facilities.
2 Residential Facilities
The program has two residential facilities: Gateway (normally 12 beds cut down to eight due to COVID-19, adult men) and Lotus House (normally 14 beds cut down to eight due to COVID-19, women with children).
Outpatient/Day Treatment
In addition, CMHS’s George W. Norman Jr. Recovery Center and Recovery Kansas City (RKC) facilities both provide outpatient/day treatment addiction services for our residential clients. CMHS’s day treatment program at RKC had to temporarily discontinued accepting women from other area residential facilities, but is looking to partner with another women’s residential program once the pandemic stabilizes.
Outcomes Tied To COMBAT Areas Of Focus
CMHS will improve client outcomes directly tied to COMBAT’s areas of focus. Outcomes for clients include:
- continued engagement in appropriate services after discharge and acquisition of social support systems conducive to recovery
- measured improvement of functioning, emotional wellbeing, psychological wellbeing, social wellbeing, or recovery from trauma;
- reduction or elimination of substance use and criminal behavior.
Through the first eight months of 2020, CMHS had provided residential and outpatient day treatment to 97 COMBAT-funded individuals (38 at Gateway, 59 at Lotus House, and 240 non-COMBAT-funded outpatient clients). In 2021, we expect to serve at least 150 clients with COMBAT funds.
